Vattenfall has announced that the Swedish state will acquire the majority stake of Videberg Kraft AB, the nuclear power company jointly owned with Industrikraft (Vattenfall press release, 25/06/2026). The Swedish government plans to acquire 60% of the stakes in Videberg Kraft AB from Vattenfall, while the remaining 40% will be equally shared between Vattenfall and Industrikraft.
The agreement aims to provide a stable, long-term ownership to enable new nuclear power in Sweden, where the “risks are shared between commercial actors and the State." The parties have also agreed on the main terms for risk-sharing and financing of the company. The new ownership structure will come into effect in 2027.
Videberg Kraft is developing a 1.4 GW nuclear project on Sweden’s west coast. The project will use three SMR’s provided by Rolls-Royce, each with an output of 470 MW. The company aims to start operations in the mid 2030’s, when it should be able to produce around 12 TWh/year of fossil-free electricity. According to the announcement, Sweden plans to notify the project to the European Commission for state aid assessment.
