Quinbrook Infrastructure Partners has started commercial operations of the second stage of its 520 MW/1.9 GWh Supernode BESS in Queensland, Australia (Quinbrook press release, 28/07/2026).
Stage 2 adds 250 MW/1 GWh of storage capacity and operates under a long-term tolling agreement with Origin Energy. Together with the already operational Stage 1, the project provides energy storage and grid support services to strengthen Queensland’selectricity network. The AUD1.2bn (USD833.5m) Supernode complex is located adjacent to the South Pine switchyard, a key transmission hub through which an estimated 80% of Queensland’s traded electricity flows.
Quinbrook also announced the financial close of Stage 3 of the project, which should add 260 MW/1.22 GWh of storage capacity under a 15-year offtake agreement with Stanwell Corporation, with commissioning expected in 2027.
Once Stage 3 is completed, Supernode’s capacity will increase to 780 MW/3.1 GWh. Quinbrook is also evaluating a potential Stage 4 expansion that could add a further 250 MW/2 GWh of battery storage and potentially support future data centre developments.
As of 2025, Australia had a pipeline of over 30 GW of planned BESS projects, of which 5.5 GW are under construction (Enerdata’s Global Energy Research).
