Sunview Group will develop 600 MW of solar PV in eastern Uzbekistan

The Malaysian energy company Sunview Group has signed a development and cooperation agreement with the Uzbek Ministry of Energy to develop two large-scale solar PV power plants totalling 600 MW in eastern Uzbekistan, as well as battery energy storage systems (BESS). Sunview will thus be responsible for the design, engineering, procurement, and construction of a 400 MW solar PV plant coupled with a 100 MW/200 MWh BESS in the Andijan district, as well as another 200 MW solar PV plant coupled with a 50MW/100MWh BESS in the Fergana district.

As of end-2023, solar represented only about 1% of Uzbekistan’s installed capacity with 253 MW. The country currently has about 800 MW of solar capacity under construction and over 2.4 GW under development. In January 2024, Uzbekistan set a target to reach 27 GW of renewable energy capacity and 40% of electricity production from renewables by 2030 (against 2.5 GW and 7% in 2023).
