Sunon Asogli, the largest independent power producer (IPP) in Ghana, has submitted plans to develop a 508 MW CCGT power plant in Kpone (Ghana). The company, which is owned by Shenzhen Energy Group (60%) and China Africa Development Fund (40%), already operates two plants totalling 560 MW of gas-fired CCGT capacity, contributing to around 15% of dependable capacities. The third project would raise the company's capacity to over 1 GW.
Sunon Asogli also plans to develop a 100 MW wind project in Ada and a 200 MW utility-scale solar power plant in northern Ghana, with sites at Tamale, Yendi, Sawla, and Wa. The first 50 MW power plant would be developed within 12 months and the remaining 150 MW capacity would be commissioned before the end of 2025. All the power will be sold to the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG).
At the end of 2023, gas accounted for 49% of the installed capacity in Ghana with 2.7 GW, followed by hydro (29%) with 1.6 GW and oil (20%) with 1.1 GW.
