US solar power project developer SunEdison has won a bid to develop a 500 MW solar power project in Andhra Pradesh (India) and sell solar power to the state's power utility. The company offered a price of Rs 4.63 (US$7.06c) per kWh, which is significantly lower than the previous lowest solar tariff (Rs 5.05/kWh) offered by SkyPower (Canada) for a solar power project in Madhya Pradesh.
In September 2014, the government of Andhra Pradesh announced that it planned to develop up to 2,500 MW of solar projects in the Ananthapur, Kurnool and Kadapa districts. The projects would be carried out by the state's utility Andhra Pradesh Generation Company (APGENCO), the New and Renewable Energy Development Corporation of Andhra Pradesh (NREDCAP) and the Solar Energy Corporation of India (SECI). In addition, 2 GW of rooftop solar capacity could be installed by 2022, as part of India's plans to install 40 GW of rooftop solar capacity by 2022.
