The Japanese trading house Sumitomo Corporation has formed a consortium with Inpex, Japan Petroleum Exploration (JAPEX), TEPCO Renewable Power, JR-East Energy Development (a unit of East Japan Railway) and three other companies to jointly bid at a planned auction for a 480 MW offshore wind plant project near Noshiro, Mitane and Oga in Akita, in northern Japan. The 480 MW offshore wind project would be commissioned in 2026.
In August 2019, the government identified 11 areas for offshore wind power promotion in 5 prefectures of Japan. Four areas are more advanced, where councils will be formed by the two Ministries and where wind measurements and geological surveys will start immediately, namely Noshiro (Mitane and Oga), in Akita prefecture; Yurihonjo (north and south), in Akita prefecture; Choshi, in Tokyo prefecture ; and Goto (floating wind), in Nagasaki prefecture.
In May 2020, RWE and Kyushu Electric signed a Joint Bidding Agreement to start a full-scale feasibility study for a 700 MW offshore wind project that would be developed off the coast of Yurihonjo in the Akita prefecture, in northern Japan. In April 2019, the two companies signed a cooperation agreement to jointly assess opportunities for offshore wind projects in Japan.
