Norwegian energy group Statoil has been declared the provisional winner of the U.S. government’s wind lease sale of 321 km² offshore New York. The company submitted a US$42.5m winning bid during the online offshore wind auction. The lease comprises an area that could potentially accommodate more than 1 GW of offshore wind, with a phased development expected to start with 400-600 MW.
This announcement follows recent developments by Danish energy group DONG Energy, which owns a 50% stake in Bay State Wind, a 1,000 MW offshore wind project located off Martha's Vineyard in Massachusetts (50% sold to Eversource in December 2016). Commissioning is expected in the early 2020s.
Statoil is already active in offshore wind projects in Europe, thanks to a 40% interest in the 317 MW Sheringham Shoal wind park in the UK (2012), a 50% stake in the 385 MW Arkona wind project in Germany (2019) and a 35% stake in the 402 MW Dudgeon offshore wind park offshore Norfolk in the UK (2017).
