The state of Queensland will build a 500 MW onshore wind park (Australia)

The Australian state of Queensland has announced it will build a 500 MW onshore wind park located in South Burnett, near Kingaroy (eastern Australia). The government of Queensland will inject AUD776m (US$505m) in the proposed Tarong West wind park, which will be constructed by the state-owned Stanwell Corporation, in partnership with the UK-based renewable energy company RES.

The project, which will become Australia’s largest state-owned wind plant, will comprise 150 turbines that will generate enough electricity to power 230,000 households. A final investment decision (FID) on the project is expected in 2024, with the start of construction planned for the same year. The Tarong West wind park could come into commercial operation by 2026.

Queensland targets 50% of the state’s electricity consumption to be sourced from renewables by 2030, and aims to achieve net-zero by 2050. At the end of 2021, wind represented 11% of Australia’s installed capacity with 9 GW and about 9% of its power generation with 25 TWh.
