State Grid commissions a 1.2 GW pumped storage hydropower plant (China)

China has fully commissioned the 1.2 GW Huanggou pumped storage hydropower plant (4 x 300 MW) located in Mudanjiang, Heilongjiang province (northern China). The plant, which would generate 1.8 TWh/year and pump 2.4 TWh/year, is operated by the state-owned power utility State Grid Corporation of China (SGCC). The upper reservoir has a total storage capacity of nearly 14 bcm (4 bcm for the lower reservoir).

Hydro currently accounts for 16% of China’s installed capacity with 391 GW and 16% of its power generation with 1 340 TWh (2021). Pumped-storage hydro capacity reached 36.4 GW in 2021. The country, which targets 270 GW of pumped storage hydropower capacity by 2025, will have to multiply its capacity by 7.5 in 4 years.
