The Norwegian state-owned energy group Statkraft has closed a turbines supply contract with Nordex for its 519 MW Ventos de Santa Eugenia onshore wind project in the Bahia state of Brazil, which would require a BRL2.5bn (US$452m) investment. The wind project will include 10 wind plants with 91 Nordex wind turbines of 5.7 MW each and will generate 2.3 TWh/year of electricity. The wind project is part of the first phase of the 1.1 GW Ibipeba wind complex, along with the Serra de Mangabeira wind park. It is expected to enter construction in January 2021 and to be fully commissioned in 2023.
Wind accounts for around 9% of Brazil's installed capacity with over 15 GW (2019). As of October 2020, more than 4 GW are under construction and 34 GW are under development. In August 2020, Equinor Brazil applied for a license from the Brazilian Institute of Environment and Renewable Natural Resources (IBAMA) to develop two offshore wind projects of 2 GW each. The first project, which is expected to be completed in 2024, would be built on the coast of Rio de Janeiro and the second between the states of Rio de Janeiro and Espírito Santo.
