SSE’s 443 MW Viking Wind project (UK) enters construction

SSE has poured first concrete on the first wind turbine base for its 443 MW Viking onshore wind project in Shetland (Scotland, United Kingdom). SSE’s capital expenditure on the project is estimated to be around £580m (€645m). The group took a final investment decision (FID) for the project in June 2020, and it selected Vestas in August 2020 to supply 103 turbines for the project, which is expected to produce 1.8 TWh/year. Commissioning is scheduled in 2024.

In April 2020, the British energy regulator Ofgem approved SSE Networks’s plans for the 600 MW Shetland Transmission Link project. The high voltage direct current (HVDC) power line would connect Kergord on the Shetland Isles to Caithness on the Scottish mainland. The power line could be commissioned in 2024 at the earliest, at a total cost of £649m (€725m), and would enable to export power generation from the Viking wind project.
