SSE’s 150 MW/300 MWh Ferrybridge BESS enters full operation (UK)

SSE’s 150 MW/300 MWh Ferrybridge BESS has reached full operations in West Yorkshire (United Kingdom) (SSE press release, 20/03/2026). The battery can operate for up to two hours and has the capacity to supply peak electricity demand of over 240,000 homes

The BESS was developed on the site of the former 2 GW Ferrybridge power plant, which was decommissioned in 2016. The project began its construction in 2023 with OCU Energy as the lead contractor, and it consists of 136 battery units supplied by Sungrow, and an associated 132 kV transformer. According to SSE, the project represents one of the largest of its kind in Britain

The Ferrybridge BESS is SSE’s second battery storage project to enter operation after the commissioning of the 50 MW/100 MWh Salisbury BESS in 2024. SSE has a pipeline of 470 MW/940 MWh of BESS capacity under construction, including the 320 MW/640 MWh Monk Fryston BESS in North Yorkshire and the 150 MW/300 MWh Fiddler’s Ferry BESS in Cheshire.
