The Scottish power transmission company SSEN Transmission and Danish power cable solutions company NKT have confirmed their partnership to develop two high voltage direct current (HVDC) transmission connection projects in Scotland (United Kingdom). This corresponds to the Western Isles connection project (81 km subsea line and 80 km underground wiring, 525 kV and 1.8 GW) and the Spittal to Peterhead connection (150 km subsea line, 525 kV and 2 GW), with both initiatives requiring land cable sections and the construction of new HVDC convertor stations. The partnership agreement allows NKT to start preliminary works on the projects, with the companies expecting to end the construction during the first half of 2026.
The projects are integral to SSEN’s GBP20bn (€24bn) infrastructure development programme, since both improve would the electricity transmission network in northern Scotland and facilitate the distribution of renewable energy across Great Britain by connecting onshore and offshore wind projects to the National Grid Transmission System.
