British energy group SSE has secured agreements to provide 4,451 MW of de-rated (ie available for peak production) electricity generation capacity from October 2017 to September 2018 in the Great Britain Capacity Market Auction, including 3,611 MW of coal and gas-fired power capacity and 840 MW of hydropower and pumped-storage capacity. However, the company's 423 MW Fiddler’s Ferry power plant (no Flue Gas Desulphurisation plant) failed to secure an agreement.
The 1,034 MW Peterhead gas-fired power plant also failed to secure an agreement, as in the three previous Capacity Market auctions. The Peterhead plant is required to pay significantly higher Transmission Entry Capacity (TEC) costs than other power stations on the electricity system, due to its location in north-eastern Scotland, which will prompt SSE to review future options for the plant.
