The British company SSE Renewables has submitted an application to the Irish government for a Maritime Area Consent (MAC) aimed at developing the 800 MW phase 2 of its Arlow Bank offshore wind energy project, located 6 to 13 km east of the city of Arklow in Co Wicklow (eastern Ireland). The development will build on the existing seven GE wind turbines. The project is expected to require an investment of up to €2.5bn and should deliver power by 2028, with full completion in 2029. SSE Renewables has just received permission from the Irish national planning body An Board Pleanàla to develop the onshore grid infrastructure needed to connect the Arlow Bank phase 2 project to Ireland’s transmission grid.
The project will contribute to Ireland's climate action target of reaching at least 5 GW of offshore wind capacity, and 70% of power generated from renewables, by 2030. In 2021, Ireland only had 25 MW of offshore wind installed capacity (against 4.3 GW for onshore wind).
