SSE Renewables has issued invitations to tenders (ITTs) to the six companies the group had shortlisted for construction of the 1.5 GW pumped-storage hydropower project at Coire Glas, on the shores of Loch Lochy near Invergarry in the Scottish Highlands (United Kingdom). Bids are due in April 2022. The tendering process will consist of two stages ahead of a final investment decision (FID) on whether to proceed with construction of the project in late 2023.
In October 2020, the Scottish government granted consent for the project. Initially approved for a 600 MW scheme in December 2013, revised plans were transmitted in April 2018 to the Scottish authorities for an up to 1,500 MW power plant. The project would be capable of a power output of up to 1.5 GW for 24 hours non-stop and a pumped storage capacity of up to 30 GWh.
