SSE and Equinor plan to develop a 900 MW hydrogen-fired power plant in the UK

The UK’s SSE and Norway’s Equinor plan to develop a 900 MW hydrogen-fired power plant in North Lincolnshire, England (United Kingdom), which could be operational by 2030. The proposed Keadby Hydrogen Power Station will enter environmental scoping in April 2024 before the two companies launch a public consultation. The new power plant will be designed to run on 100% hydrogen. The ambition is that this would be the case from inception, but the planning application would be ‘dual fuel’ in nature in recognition of the challenges in developing the necessary hydrogen supplies.

SSE’s Keadby site was formerly a coal-fired power station. It now hosts the 893 MW Keadby 2 gas-fired power plant commissioned in early 2023 and an onshore wind park. SSE and Equinor are also developing Keadby Carbon Capture Power Station; the 1.5 MtCO2/year CCS project would be built by a consortium of Aker Solutions, Siemens Energy and Doosan Babcock.
