Salt River Project (SRP) has announced an agreement with NextEra Energy Resources to develop 3 GW of new solar capacity in Arizona (United States) (SRP press release, 30/04/2026). The agreement calls for the construction of 500 MW of solar per year from 2029 through 2034. It is part of SRP plans to add several GW of renewable energy, including solar, as well as natural gas-fired and battery energy storage (BESS) resources.
SRP, a community-based, not-for-profit public power utility, has more than 3 GW of carbon-free resources currently serving its customers, including more than 1.5 GW of solar and more than 1.6 GW of battery storage supporting its grid. The procurement serves as a component of the utility strategy to retire coal generation by 2032. By moving solar energy into later hours, SRP intends to limit reliance on natural gas plants and maintain grid reliability during heat events.
