SPIC starts construction of Unit 5 of its Haiyang nuclear power plant in China

State Power Investment Corporation (SPIC) has started construction of unit 5 of the Haiyang nuclear power plant in Shandong province, China (World Nuclear News, 02/11/2026). The pouring of the first concrete for unit 5 represents the beginning of the final development phase of the nuclear power plant has started.

  • The nuclear site is planned for six units in three phases: Phase I (two AP1000 units, in commercial operation since 2018 and 2019, respectively); phase II (two CAP1000 units, under construction since 2022 and 2025, both scheduled to be fully operational in 2027); and phase III (CAP1000  reactors for unit 5 and unit 6).

SPIC has contracted China Nuclear Industry 24 Construction (CNNC 24) for the civil construction of the Phase III nuclear islands. Once all units are completed, the plant is expected to generate 60.9 TWh/year, equivalent to the electricity needs of 54 million people, avoiding the emission of about 50 MtCO2/year.

China targets 200 GW of nuclear capacity by 2035.
