China’s State Power Investment Corporation (SPIC) has started to build the 6 GW Ulanqab wind power project worth CNY46.5bn (US$6.5bn) in Inner Mongolia (China). In April 2019, SPIC selected five Chinese companies to supply turbines for the project, namely Shanghai Electric (1.4 GW order), Goldwind (1.3 GW), Ming Yang (1.3 GW), Dongfang (1.1 GW) and CSIC Haizhuang (900 MW). Western developers GE, Siemens and Vestas placed bids during the tender but were not selected.
SPIC announced the project in January 2019. The project has been approved by the Ulanqab Municipal Development and Reform Commission and it will be the first subsidy-free wind power project in China. The wind project is expected to be fully completed to generate electricity during the 2022 winter Olympic Games in Beijing and could supply nearly 20 TWh/year of electricity to the Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei region. SPIC will be granted a few incentives such as ensured 20-year PPA's and guaranteed grid connection.
