Spanish REE and Bolivia reach agreement over TDE's nationalisation

Spanish power transmission network operator REE has reached an "agreement in principle" with the government of Bolivia over the nationalisation of REE's Bolivian subsidiary and counterpart, Conveyor de Electricidad (TDE) in May 2012. REE held 99.94% of TDE, which operates 1,962 km of lines and 22 substations throughout the country.

In January 2013, Bolivia nationalised four electricity distribution companies controlled by Spanish Iberdrola. In 2010, four power generation companies were expropriated, including two subsidiaries of GDF SUEZ and Rurelec (UK). Nationalisations in the power sectors are based on articles 20 and 378 of the Bolivian constitution (energy production chain in the stages of generation, transmission and distribution may not be restricted solely to private interests). Since 2006, about 15 companies were nationalised in strategic sectors (oil, mining, cement, etc.).
