Spanish electricity demand remained stable in 2014

According to preliminary estimates by the electricity transmission system operator REE, electricity consumption declined by 1.2% in Spain in 2014 compared to 2013; it remained broadly stable (-0.2%) after including the seasonal and working patterns. In 2014, renewable power generation accounted for 41% of the power mix, with wind producing more than 20% of the total power generation; hydropower accounted for 15.5% of the power mix and solar for 5% (3.1% for PV and 2% for CSP). Including nuclear (22% in 2014), CO2-free generation accounted for 63% of the power mix. The share of coal remained significant, at 16%, while the share of CCGT power generation fell to 8.5%.

The contraction in gas-fired generation contributed to a new decrease in gas consumption in Spain in 2014: it dropped by 1.4% in 2014 (+2% taking into account temperatures). Transit volumes (exports, tanker loading and gas in transit to Portugal) increased by 40%, with loading of LNG tankers at regasification plants rising by 89%.
