Spain's nuclear regulator approves licence extension for Vandellós II

The Spanish nuclear regulator Consejo de Seguridad Nuclear (CSN) has approved the renewal of the authorisation to operate the Vandellós II nuclear power plant in Tarragona for an additional period of 10 years (over the 2020-2030 period). The licence was due to expire in July 2020. The final decision will be taken by the Ministry for the Ecological Transition and Demographic Challenge.

Vandellós II consists of one 1,045 MW nuclear reactor commissioned in 1988; the first reactor of the Vandellós nuclear power plant, rated 480 MW, was commissioned in 1972 and permanently shut down in 1990. The shareholders of the plant are Endesa (72%) and Iberdrola (28%).

In May 2020, the CSN authorised the two reactors of the Almaraz nuclear power plant to operate until 1 November 2027 (for the 1,011 MW unit 1) and until 31 October 2028 (for the 1,006 MW unit 2), setting 13 limits and condition to the extended lifetime. In February 2019, the Spanish Ministry for the Ecological Transition announced plans to close all the domestic nuclear power plants between 2025 and 2035 as part of the country's objective to generate all its electricity from renewable sources by 2050.
