Spain reaches 50% of power production from renewable energy in 2023

According to the Spanish power grid operator Red Electrica de Espana (REE), electricity demand in Spain contracted by 2.3% (-1.9% corrected from the calendar and temperature effects) in 2023. Power generation contracted by around 3%, as the strong decrease in coal-fired power generation (-50%) and in CCGT generation (-35%) was offset by a higher hydropower (+42%) and solar PV (+34%) power generation.

50.4% of the annual electricity production of 2023 was sourced from renewable energies, setting a record in both the share of renewables in the generation mix and the total output (135 TWh). The leading green technologies in 2023 where wind (24%) and solar PV (14%) with technologies such as nuclear (20.3%) and combined-cycle gas generation (17.2%) also representing an important share of Spain’s power mix. Overall, over 70% of the power mix was CO2-free in 2023.
