The Spanish Ministry for the Ecological Transition and the Demographic Challenge (MITECO) has granted €100m to four innovative energy storage projects through reversible pumped hydroelectric plants. The projects are located in the regions of Extremadura, Castilla y León, and Catalonia, and are expected to increase the country’s turbine power to up to 2 GW, and storage capacity to almost 30 GWh. Three of the projects will be covered by the grant, while the fourth (located in La Fatarella, Tarragona) will receive a partial aid with the remaining budget. The projects are expected to enter commercial operations by 31 December 2030, in accordance with the authorisation of the European Commission.
The aid is financed with funds from Recovery, Transformation and Resilience Plan (RTRP) and managed by the Institute for Energy Diversification and Saving (IDAE). Spain’s NECP plans to achieve a total of 22 GW of storage capacity by 2030, and 30 GW by 2050.
