Spain gives provisional approval for H2Med hydrogen pipeline

The Spanish Government has provisionally authorised Enagás, Spain’s gas network operator, to provisionally start the development of the European Hydrogen Network Projects of Common Interest (PCIs) part of the H2Med pipeline project. Specifically, the projects are the Portugal-Spain hydrogen interconnector (CelZa section), indoor hydrogen infrastructures in Spain, the Spain-France hydrogen interconnector (BarMar), and the hydrogen storage facilities “H2 storage North-1” in Cantabria and “H2 storage North-2” in the Basque Country. The approval under the Royal Decree 8/2023 provisionally authorises Enagás to approve, build, commission, operate, monitor and maintain pipeline projects and underground storage projects of hydrogen.

The H2Med pipeline project was declared a PCI in April 2024, and it aims to transport green hydrogen to the countries of northern Europe, via France. It expects to transport nearly 10% of the hydrogen consumed in Europe by 2030 (2 Mt/year of green hydrogen).
