Spain extends operations of 2 GW Almaraz nuclear plant until 2030

The Spanish government has approved a limited extension of operations at the 2 GW Almaraz nuclear power plant, allowing its two reactors to continue operating until June 2030. The decision postpones the planned closure of Almaraz I and Almaraz II, which were previously scheduled to begin decommissioning in 2027 and 2028 respectively (Euro News, 14/08/2026).

The extension follows a request submitted in October 2025 by the plant's owners, Iberdrola, Endesa and Naturgy, and a favourable assessment from Spain's Nuclear Safety Council. According to the government, the measure is intended to address uncertainty in international energy markets. The government said the extension would not alter Spain's broader plan to phase out its nuclear fleet by 2035, despite criticism from renewable energy and environmental groups.

Almaraz, located in the Extremadura region, supplies more than 7% of Spain's electricity consumption and is the country's highest-producing nuclear plant historically.

In 2025, Spain has a nuclear installed capacity of 7 GW, representing around 5% of its total installed electric capacity and 18% of its power mix (Enerdata’s Global Energy Research).
