Spain delimits areas for offshore wind projects

The Spanish Council of Ministers has endorsed a decree that allows for the development of offshore wind projects on 5,000 km2 of maritime territory in 19 blocs. The new delimitations, which limits offshore wind development to less than 0.5% of the country’s waters, were created after five years of talks with stakeholders from the maritime sector. The government determined that the production of electricity in those 19 blocs does not enter in conflict with other activities, such as fishing, maritime traffic, etc. The Ministry for the Ecological Transition and the Demographic Challenge (MITECO) is now expected to award concessions for those areas in principle in the first half of 2023. Spain aims to deploy as much as 3 GW of offshore wind capacity by 2030.
