Spain declares climate emergency and targets climate neutrality by 2050

The new Spanish government has declared a "climate emergency", announcing that it will set 30 priority lines of actions to fight climate change. A law on climate will be referred to Parliament to reach zero net emissions by 2050, a 100% renewable power supply system, zero-emission transports (for passenger cars and commercial vehicles), and a carbon-neutral agricultural sector. In addition, Spain will present its second National Climate Change Adaptation Plan that will include the review of impact indicators. The government will also work on inclusive policies, to act against energy poverty and ensure a smooth energy transition.

In its 2021-2030 National Integrated Plan on Energy and Climate (Plan Nacional Integrado de Energía y Clima, PNIEC), Spain already set a target of 100% renewable power generation by 2050. The final energy consumption of renewables will have to double by 2030 and renewables should cover 74% of the power mix by 2030.
