Spain approves closure of 3 coal-fired power plants (1.2 GW)

The Spanish Ministry for the Ecological Transition and the Demographic Challenge (MITECO) has allowed the closure of three coal-fired power plants totalling 1,205 MW, namely Iberdrola's 348 MW Lada-4 power plant in Asturias, Naturgy's 557 MW Meirama power plant in A Coruña and Viesgo's 300 MW Puente Nuevo power plant in Córdoba. The power plants are expected to be closed within 12 months.

With the shutdown of Lada-4, Iberdrola will stop its last coal-fired power plant in the world, since the group has retired 17 coal-fired and oil-fired facilities since 2001. The group plans to build four wind parks with a combined capacity of 130 MW in Asturias. Naturgy will also build two 70 MW wind projects near the Meirama power plant and is considering other investments around the site. As for Viesgo, the company will have 18 months to stop the Puento Nuevo power plant; the company also plans to stop its Los Barrios coal-fired power plant in Cadiz.

Spain plans to exit coal-fired power generation by 2030.
