According to the Spanish power grid operator Red Eléctrica de España (REE), Spain added almost 5.6 GW of solar PV capacity to the grid in 2023, 28% more than the capacity added during 2022. The 5,594 MW installed sum to a total solar capacity of 25.5 GW connected to the grid, occupying 20.3% of the total installed capacity in Spain. In addition to the solar capacity increase, there were also added to the grid an additional 661 MW of wind power and 4 MW of other renewables, with wind power remaining as the renewable technology with the largest presence in the country’s capacity (24.5%) followed by combined cycle (20.9%), photovoltaic (20.3%) and hydro (13.6%).
In January 2024, REE announced that 50.3% of Spain's total power generation was sourced from renewable energies in 2023, with wind accounting for 23.5% of the power mix, followed by solar with 14% and hydropower (9.5%). Renewable power generation in Spain rose by 15% in 2023 (including +34% for solar PV) reaching a record high.
Under the draft update of the NECP 2021-2030, Spain aims to reach an installed capacity of 76 GW of solar PV, 62 GW of wind (including 3 GW offshore), 4.8 GW of CSP, 1.4 GW of biomass, 62 MW of marine energies and 22 GW of storage by 2030.
