SP Energy Networks, a subsidiary of Scottish Power, has filed a consent application with the Scottish Government for a major upgrade of the electricity transmission network linking Denny in Stirlingshire and Wishaw in Lanarkshire (ScottishPower press release, 23/07/2026).
“The project is part of a wider programme of upgrades to the electricity network across the UK and is essential in moving renewable electricity around the country, from where it is generated to where it is needed” said the company.
The proposed works include the upgrade of substations supporting 35km of 400kV overhead transmission lines. In addition, a new 19km overhead line will be built between Bonnybridge and Glenmavis to strengthen the local electricity network.
The project is intended to expand network capacity, ease transmission constraints, and ensure the grid can reliably accommodate new homes, businesses, transport electrification, and low-carbon industries throughout central Scotland.
Once completed, the upgrades will be integrated into the existing transmission network, allowing an additional 1 GW of renewable electricity to be transmitted from generation sites to areas of demand.
