Southwest Power Pool expands operations to US’ Western grid

The US transmission system operator (TSO) Southwest Power Pool (SPP) has been approved by the US FERC to provide full services in both the Eastern and Western Interconnections of the US’ power grid. In June 2024, it submitted an amended tariff that includes provisions enabling Western members to join the Eastern grid and participate in SPP’s Integrated Marketplace, transmission planning, reliability coordination and other TSO services. The approval of these provisions will make of SPP the first regional transmission organisation (RTO) in the US to provide full services in both interconnections starting from April 2026.

The expansion of the RTO is part of SPP’s five-year strategic plan, which seeks to integrate Western facilities into SPP’s existing market system to bolster reliability and resiliency, to reduce emissions of power resources through the economic dispatch of a wholesale power market, and to maximise operational efficiencies of renewable resources.
