Southern Power completes the acquisition of 720MW gas-fired units (US)

Southern Power, the subsidiary of US power utility Southern Company, has completed the acquisition of the Mankato Energy Center in Minnesota (United States) from Calpine Corporation, as agreed in August 2016.

The transaction includes the existing 375 MW Mankato Energy Center I gas-fired CCGT power plant that was commissioned in 2006 and that delivers electricity to Northern States Power, a subsidiary of Xcel Energy, through 2026 under a 20-year power purchase agreement (PPA). It also includes the 345 MW Mankato Energy Center II expansion, which is currently under development and should be commissioned by June 2019. Power will be sold to Northern States Power under a 20-year PPA. When complete, the Mankato Energy Center will represent 720 MW of generating capacity.

With the addition of the Mankato Energy Center, Southern Power owns 10 CCGT and combustion-turbine, gas-fired power plants across five US states, representing 9,300 MW of generating capacity operating or under construction.
