Southern Company files plan to boost renewables in Georgia (US) by 1 GW

Southern Company's subsidiary Georgia Power has filed a new integrated resource plan (IRP) with the Georgia Public Service Commission (PSC) that includes a request to approve the procurement of up to 1 GW of new renewable energy capacity. If approved, the subsidiary's renewables capacity would account for 18% of its portfolio by 2024.

Additionally, the company is requesting the decertification of four coal-fired units at Plant Hammond near Rome and of one coal unit at Plant McIntosh near Rincon in southeast Georgia. Georgia Power also proposes energy efficiency targets similar to those approved in previous IRPs and plans to reduce peak demand by approximately 1,600 MW by 2022, which is 10% of the company's current peak demand.

As of 2018, Georgia Power is the largest electric subsidiary of Southern Company and provides electricity to about 2.5 million customers, most of whom were residential. Its energy mix includes oil and gas-fired power plants (46%), coal-fired plants (26%), nuclear reactors (22%) and renewable energies.
