Korea Hydro & Nuclear Power (KHNP), a subsidiary of the Korea Electric Power Corporation, has poured first concrete of its unit 4 of the Shin Hanul nuclear power plant in South Korea (KHNP press release, 29/05/2026).
This step comes under a 2014 agreement signed between KHNP and Ulchin County to build Shin Hanul units 3 and 4, each rated 1,340 MW, which both received construction permits in September 2024. First concrete was poured on Unit 3 in May 2025 and the reactor is expected to be commissioned in 2032. Unit 4 will be completed in 2033. Combined, the two units will supply 46% of the annual power requirements of the Gyeongbuk region.
In 2025, nuclear energy represented 17% of South Korea’s installed electric capacity and 30% of the country's total power generation (Enerdata’s Global Energy & CO2 Data).
