South Korea targets 20% of power mix from renewable sources by 2030

South Korea has announced its objective to reach a solar and wind capacity of 100 GW by 2030, aiming to cover at least 20% of its power generation with renewable sources (Yonhap News Agency, 06/04/2026). In 2025, the share of renewables on South Korea’s total energy generation accounted for 11.4%

Besides promoting solar and wind projects, the government aims to support the development of related technologies (such as solar power modules, wind power turbines and battery energy storage systems (BESS)), and to help the transformation of major industries towards more “eco-friendly” models.

In addition, the government targets 40% of electric or hydrogen vehicles in new car sales by 2030 and plans to gradually shut down 60 coal-fired power plants by 2040.

According to a statement made by the South Korean Ministry of Climate, Energy and Environment, the country aims to lower its dependence on energy imports, while responding to the growing power demand from the advanced industries.
