South Korea starts first APR-1400 reactor of Shin Hanul nuclear plant

The South Korean utility Korea Hydro and Nuclear Power (KHNP) has started the first APR-1400 reactor of the Shin Hanul nuclear power plant in the county of Uljin (South Korea).  The 1,350 MW pressurised water reactor (PWR) has reached first criticality and is scheduled to be connected to the grid in June 2022. Construction of Unit 1 started in 2012 and was originally supposed to be completed in 2017 but suffered delays. A second APR-1400 unit is scheduled to be completed in the near future at the Shin Hanul plant.

27% of South Korea’s power was generated through nuclear energy in 2021, for an installed capacity of more than 23 GW across 24 reactors. 5 more GW of nuclear capacity are under construction in the country. South Korea, which does not consider nuclear as an option to reach carbon neutrality by 2050, aims to close 10 of its 24 nuclear reactors by 2038.
