South Korea plans to develop a 500 MW solar power plant in Zambia

South Korea has sent a delegation to discuss investments in Zambia’s energy sector through solar and nuclear power projects (Zambian government press release, 17/06/2026). The proposed investments include a 500 MW solar project that would be developed in ten phases (each with a capacity of 50 MW) with technical teams from both countries with Zambia providing the required land for the development. Once operational, the project is expected to have a long-term power purchase agreement (PPA) with Zambia’s national power utility ZESCO

If successful, the investments are expected to further deepen Zambia-Korea cooperation and contribute significantly to the country’s efforts to diversify and expand Zambia’s energy generation capacity. According to the Zambian government, the country requires an expansion of about 6 GW to reach 10 GW, in order to support its ambition to produce 3 Mt/year of cooper by 2030.
