South Korea clears two new 1.4 GW reactors at Shin Kori nuclear plant

The nuclear regulatory authority of South Korea, the Nuclear Safety and Security Commission (NSSC), has approved the development by Korea Hydro and Nuclear Power (KHNP) of two new reactors at the Shin Kori nuclear power plant in south-eastern Korea.

The existing Shin Kori plant consists of two operational OPR-1000 reactors (950 MW net, 1,000 MW gross) that were commissioned in 2011 and 2012, respectively. Two APR-1,400 reactors (1,350 MW net, 1,400 MW gross) have been built on the site: Shin Kori-3 reached first criticality in December 2015 and was connected to the grid in January 2016, while the fourth unit is still under construction and expected to be commissioned in early 2017, respectively.

In September 2012, KHNP applied with the NSSC for the construction of two further APR-1,400 reactors and signed a construction contract to a consortium of Samsung C&T, Doosan and Hanhwa Construction in June 2015. Once approved, construction of Shin Kori-5 is expected to start in September 2016 (that of Shin Kori-6 is expected one year later). The new reactors will be commissioned in March 2021 and March 2022.
