South Australia and Victoria unveil power supply and storage plans

The governments of the Australian states of South Australia and Victoria have unveiled power supply plans including power storage technologies.

The government of South Australia has announced plans to invest more than A$500m to build a new 250 MW gas-fired peak power plant worth A$360m - it would provide power grid stability and emergency power generation - and to develop a 100-150 MW power storage facility worth A$150m. It has invited bids to supply the peaking power plant and the battery. Earlier in March 2017, Tesla founder Elon Musk offered to supply a battery to solve power shortages in South Australia or do it for free. In addition, the South Australia government plans to double the previously announced incentive scheme for new gas supplies, offering A$48m to gas companies for co-investment and offering landlords 10% of state royalties from gas wells on their properties.

In Victoria, the government has announced a A$20m (US$15m) investment to support the development of large-scale storage facilities, to reach up to 100 MW of power storage capacity by the end of 2018. The government is also seeking expressions of interest for an additional 80 MW of storage capacity for pumped-hydro or solar thermal (renewable technologies including batteries).
