South Africa’s Transnet National Ports Authority (TNPA) has signed a 25-year terminal operator agreement with Ukwanda LNG for the development of an onshore LNG regasification facility at the Port of Ngqura, in eastern South Africa (TNPA press release, 28/05/2026).
The 3.6 Mt/year LNG facility is planned to support a 3 GW gas-to-power allocation, providing lower-carbon baseload electricity to complement South Africa’s growing renewable energy mix. The project, which represents an investment of about ZAR22bn (USD1.35bn), features a temporary Floating Unit and plans to install the permanent onshore infrastructure to supply gas to off-takers, industry, Data Centres and Independent Power Producers (IPPs) to enable the production of about 3.5 GW of electricity within the Coega Special Economic Zone (SEZ). Construction is expected to take approximately 36 months, while commissioning is targeted for 2035.
The project is part of the South Africa’s Just Energy Transition programme, which aims to unlock a planned 6 GW gas-to-power pipeline.
