The government of South Africa has authorised Eskom to buy at least 6,800 MW of solar and wind power from independent power producers (IPPs) for the years 2022 to 2024. Eskom must get 6,800 MW of wind and solar power, 513 MW from storage, 3,000 MW from gas and 1500 MW from coal. The decision paves the way for the fifth bid window (BW 5) of the Renewable Energy Independent Power Producer Procurement Programme (REIPPP). In addition, bids will be collected for gas-to-power plants and energy storage, as well as for coal.
In August 2020, the government of South Africa, via its Department of Mineral Resources and Energy (DMRE), issued a request for proposals to procure 2,000 MW of emergency power capacity. Projects under the Risk Mitigation Independent Power Producers Procurement Programme (RMIPPPP) must be fully operational by end-June 2022. The request for proposal is expected to attract investment in the region of ZAR40bn (US$2.3bn).
