South Africa selects consortium to develop a new LNG terminal in Richards Bay

South Africa’s Transnet National Ports Authority (TNPA) has selected a consortium of Vopak Terminal Durban and South Africa's state-owned company Transnet Pipelines as the preferred bidder to develop and operate a new LNG terminal to be built in the port of Richards Bay (eastern South Africa). Under the agreement, the Vopak-led consortium would operate the terminal for a period of 25 years.

The new LNG terminal’s planned capacity has not yet been revealed, but the facility is expected to enter commercial operations in 2027. The terminal is a partnership between the private sector and the public sector, with the private sector as the lead investor. TNPA will invest in the common user port infrastructure, while the terminal operator is expected to provide the terminal infrastructure.

As of end-2022, South Africa did not yet possess any LNG regasification capacity.
