South Africa selects 13 bidders for 1,084 MW renewable projects

The Ministry of Energy of South Africa has selected 13 additional private-sector bidders for the fourth round of the Renewable Energy Independent Power Producer Procurement (REIPPP) Programme, which will develop another 1,084 MW of renewable power projects. SunEdison, which had been awarded an 86 MW solar project in the fourth bid round, has been awarded an additional five solar PV projects in the Northern Cape and North West Province totalling 371 MW. Mainstream Renewable Power has been awarded two large-scale wind energy projects with a total generation capacity of 250 MW, representing a total investment of US$469m; the 140 MW Kangnas wind project will be located in Nama Khoi (Northern Cape), while the 110 MW Perdekraal East wind project will be located in the Cape Winelands District (Western Cape). Gestamp has been awarded a 20-year PPA for the 102 MW Copperton wind project in the Northern Cape province (commissioning expected in late 2017). Enel has been awarded two 20-year PPAs for two large wind projects, namely the 142 MW Soetwater and the 138 MW Garob wind projects in the Northern Cape province; total investment is estimated at €340m and commissioning is scheduled for 2018. The 75 MW Waterloo solar project was also included in the tender.
