South Africa’s Ministry of Mineral Resources and Energy has released its draft Gas Master Plan (GMP2024) for public comments. The draft GMP2024 aims to ensure gas supply security by diversifying its options from both local and international markets while also providing a clear policy direction for the gas industry in South Africa. It focuses on the upstream and midstream sectors.
To do so, the plan emphasizes the need for an extensive infrastructure network to support the gas industry, including considerations for the protection of natural resources, demand uncertainties and transitioning to cleaner technologies. The strategy outlines different scenarios based on varying levels of gas demand, with corresponding plans for infrastructure development and power generation capacity. South Africa aims to collaborate with partners in the Southern African Development Community (SADC) to ensure regional energy security and stability. The document will be up for public comments, including stakeholders and industry experts, until 15 June 2024.
Natural gas production in South Africa is marginal (less than 1 bcm in 2022). The country imports about 4.3 bcm/year from Mozambique through the 865 km long Rompco gas pipeline connecting both countries. Its gas import infrastructure is currently being used to its maximum capacity.
