South Africa proposes 3 new development zones for wind and solar PV

South Africa has selected three additional Renewable Energy Development Zones (REDZs) for developing wind and solar photovoltaic energy projects. Two new REDZs for developing solar PV projects have been identified in the eMalahleni (Eastern cape province) and Klerksdorp (North West province) areas and the third REDZ for developing wind projects would be located near Beaufort West (Western Cape province). REDZ provide incentives to project developers, as the authorisation process is simplified and shortened, lasting only 50 days. In November 2019, the government designated three new Renewable Energy Development Zones (REDZ) for renewable energy projects in addition to the eight areas identified in 2015.

According to the Integrated Resource Plan (IRP) adopted in October 2019, 12 GW of coal-fired power capacity are planned to be stopped by 2030. Developing renewable power capacities in the coal-producing regions would help rehabilitate these areas. South Africa also aims to add 6.5 GW of solar PV and 9.5 GW of wind by 2030, with the objective to reduce reliance on coal, which accounted for 89% of its power generation in 2018.
