South Africa plans to add over 5 GW of new nuclear capacity by 2039

The South African Minister of Electricity and Energy has unveiled its latest Integrated Resource Plan (South African government press release, 19/10/2025).

  • The IRP 2025 proposes to increase its generation capacities to 105 GW by 2039 (34 GW of wind, 25 GW of solar, 16 GW of gas, 8.5 GW of BESS, and 5.2 GW of nuclear).

The IRP 2025 also proposes a nuclear industrialization plan to analyse possibility to develop up to 10 GW of new nuclear capacity (1.9 GW by 2024), and a Clean Coal Technologies Demonstration Plant to explore “alternative solutions for the continued use of coal power generation”.

At the end of 2024, South Africa's installed capacity was of 62.8 GW, 69% of which is from coal, 11% from solar, 6% from hydroelectricity, 6% from oil, 5% from wind, and 3% from nuclear.
