South Africa close its second bid round for 1 GW of renewable capacity

On 9 May 2013 South Africa has closed its second bid window for the procurement of 1,044 MW of renewable energy capacity from South Africa's Renewable Energy Independent Power Producer Programme (REIPPP). The government and Eskom signed agreements with power producers for 19 projects worth ZAR28bn (US$3.1bn): 7 wind parks projects were awarded for a total capacity of 527 MW, 9 PV projects (417 MW), one 50 MW CSP project and 14.3 MW of small hydropower plants. The first plants of the programme are expected to enter into operation late in 2013, while all plants are due by end-2016.

The Minister has determined that 3 725 MW to be generated from renewable energy sources is required to ensure the continued uninterrupted supply of electricity. The REIPPP has been designed so as to contribute towards this target through the us of three bid rounds. The bidders are required to bid on tariff and the identified socio-economic development objectives of the Department of Energy. The tariff will be payable by the buyer (Eskom) pursuant to the power purchase agreement to be entered into between the buyer and the project company of a preferred bidder.
