Angola and Zambia plan to build a 1,400 km long oil pipeline linking Lobito (Angola) to Lusaka (Zambia) with a capacity of 100,000 bbl/d. The project will be developed by Angola’s national oil corporation Sonangol and Zambian company Baseli Balisel Resources and achieved in 5 years. US$5bn has been set aside to finance the project.
It will allow Sonangol to find prospects for its proposed second refinery in Lobito, and Zambia to diversify its oil supply. A memorandum of understanding (MoU) was signed between the two countries in November 2018.
So far, Zambia has already one pipeline transporting crude oil from the port of Dar es Salaam (Tanzania) to Ndola refinery, where it is processed. In May 2019, Zambia and Tanzania presented a plan to develop a refined product pipeline between Dar es Salaam and Ndola for US$1.5bn. The two countries aim to complete a feasibility study by the end of 2019.
